The final 32 district finals of the Nebraska boys basketball postseason tip off this week. For Classes C1, C2, D1 and D2, these are true win-or-go-home games — eight district final winners per class punch their ticket to state. Classes A and B operate differently: seven district winners qualify automatically, plus one wildcard (the best losing district finalist by wildcard point average), giving teams a slim safety net even in defeat. By Tuesday night, the entire boys state tournament bracket — all 48 qualifiers across six classes — will be set for Pinnacle Bank Arena and Bob Devaney Center on March 11–14.
Here are the matchups to circle this week, powered by the NebPreps Computer Ratings.
Game of the Week: #3 Johnson-Brock vs. #6 Freeman — Class C2 District Final (Mon., Mar. 2)
The highest combined rating of any game this week belongs to this C2 district final. No. 3 Johnson-Brock (22-4, 81.31 rating) hosts No. 6 Freeman (18-5, 76.66) in a matchup between two teams that have been among the best in the class all season. Johnson-Brock’s 81.31 rating trails only Alma and Bergan Catholic in C2, and Freeman has won 18 of 23 games against a solid schedule. The combined rating of 157.97 edges out every Class A and B matchup on the board. This one has the feel of a state tournament game happening a round early.
Class A: Top Seeds Host for State Tournament Berths
Six of seven Class A district finals are set for Monday, with the seventh on Tuesday. No. 1 Omaha Westside (22-4, 81.50 rating) is the top-rated team in the class but draws No. 11 Millard South (14-10) on Tuesday — a manageable matchup on paper, though the Patriots are riding a six-game winning streak into the final, including a district semifinal win over Benson.
The most competitive Class A final by the numbers is No. 6 Lincoln North Star (18-6, 74.97) at No. 8 Papillion-LaVista (17-8, 67.24). That’s a 7.7-point rating gap — the tightest in the class. North Star has been one of the most improved teams in Class A this season, and Papio is battle-tested from a brutal district path.
No. 2 Creighton Prep (20-5, 80.02) hosts No. 12 Lincoln High (15-8) in a matchup where the Junior Jays are heavy favorites — Prep’s 80.02 rating gives them the second-largest edge in Class A behind only Westside. No. 4 Bellevue West (19-5) hosts Lincoln East (15-9), No. 5 Lincoln Southwest (20-4) hosts Omaha Westview (15-9), and No. 9 Omaha Central (16-8) travels to No. 7 Papillion-LaVista South (16-6) in a closely rated matchup (2.4-point gap).
Class B: Skutt and Norris Chase a Championship Collision
The two best teams in Class B have been on a collision course all season — and both need to win Monday to keep it alive. No. 1 Omaha Skutt Catholic (23-2, 91.21 rating) hosts No. 15 Gretna (13-11) in a matchup that looks lopsided by the numbers — but Gretna already beat the SkyHawks 43-40 back on Dec. 11. That loss is one of Skutt’s only two all season. Skutt’s 91.21 rating is the highest among Class A and B teams playing a district final this week, but the Dragons have proven they can play with anyone.
No. 2 Norris (21-2, 89.78) has the second-highest rating and hosts No. 14 Omaha Gross Catholic (15-10). Norris hasn’t lost since a three-point defeat to Skutt on Feb. 10 and has outscored opponents by an average of 20 points across three straight wins since.
No. 3 Scottsbluff (20-4, 81.25) hosts Crete (17-7) in the B-3 final, while No. 4 Elkhorn North (16-5) travels to McCook (18-7) in B-6. Wahoo (19-4, No. 5 rating) hosts Lincoln Pius X (9-16) in a mismatch by the numbers, and Roncalli Catholic (20-4, No. 6) hosts Bennington (16-8) on Tuesday.
The wildcard race could matter here: seven district winners make state, plus the best losing finalist by wildcard points. A loss in a competitive final doesn’t necessarily end your season.
Class C1: Auburn and Cozad Eye State Bids
Ogallala already punched its ticket with a 90-32 rout of Columbus Lakeview in the C1-1 district final on Saturday, improving to 25-0 on the season. The Indians remain the state’s only undefeated boys basketball team and carry the highest rating in any class (106.81).
Four C1 district finals remain Monday. No. 2 Auburn (23-1, 86.86) hosts No. 11 Omaha Concordia (16-6) with a state bid on the line. Auburn has lost just once all year. No. 3 Cozad (24-2, 84.61) hosts No. 15 Syracuse (17-8) — Cozad has won 24 games and the rating gap here (23.4 points) is massive. No. 9 Douglas County West (20-6) hosts No. 7 Winnebago (18-4) in the tightest C1 matchup remaining (2.3-point rating gap), and Grand Island Central Catholic (21-5) hosts Mount Michael (16-8).
Class C2: Bergan Catholic Leads a Loaded Field
Beyond the Freeman-Johnson-Brock headliner, four more C2 district finals round out the schedule. No. 2 Bergan Catholic (24-1, 82.00) hosts No. 19 Crofton (18-7) on Tuesday — Bergan has lost just once all season and is the clear favorite. No. 4 Valentine (22-3, 77.39) hosts No. 16 Hemingford (16-7), No. 7 Kimball (19-6) hosts No. 14 Pender (21-5), and No. 12 North Bend Central (22-5) hosts No. 15 Sandy Creek (19-7).
Class D1: Elm Creek–Wausa and McCool Junction–Twin Loup Headline
Two D1 matchups carry combined ratings above 154 — rivaling the best games in larger classes. No. 6 Elm Creek (20-5, 77.43) hosts No. 8 Wausa (19-5, 76.76) in a district final where the rating gap is less than one point. That’s about as close as it gets.
No. 10 McCool Junction (18-6, 73.13) travels to No. 2 Twin Loup (21-3, 81.00) on Tuesday in another marquee matchup. Twin Loup’s 81.00 rating is second in D1 only to Howells-Dodge. Speaking of the Jaguars — No. 1 Howells-Dodge (22-3, 82.33) hosts No. 29 BDS (9-14) in a first-round-bye feel of a district final, while No. 3 East Butler (24-1, 79.25) hosts Maywood-Hayes Center (17-8). East Butler has lost just once all season and is a legitimate state title contender.
Class D2: St. Mary’s and Archangels Catholic Are on a Mission
The top two teams in Class D2 are both heavy favorites. No. 1 St. Mary’s (24-2, 94.23) hosts Nebraska Lutheran (10-12) — the Cardinals’ 94.23 rating is the highest of any team playing a district final this week. No. 2 Archangels Catholic (23-2, 89.72) hosts Mullen (12-10) on Tuesday in a similarly lopsided matchup by the numbers.
The more competitive D2 finals include No. 7 Leyton (17-5, 72.23) hosting Falls City Sacred Heart (16-8, 65.72) and No. 12 Wynot (15-11, 64.96) hosting Bancroft-Rosalie (14-10, 62.73) on Tuesday.
