Mason McConnaughey, the Nebraska baseball team’s Friday starter, has been lost for the season, Coach Will Bolt announced Wednesday. The junior right-hander from Topeka, Kansas, suffered an arm injury pitching against Sam Houston last weekend, a university release said.

“We are disappointed to hear the news of Mason’s season-ending injury,” Bolt said in the release. “We are grateful that Mason is in excellent care with our medical team and are confident in a full recovery.”

McConnaughey, in his second season at Nebraska after transferring from Cloud County Community College, was 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA in three starts. He was on the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List and earned Preseason All-America recognition from D1 Baseball and the National College Baseball Writers Association, after earning second-team All-Big Ten honors last season.

“Mason’s not only a key part of our pitching staff but also a leader in the clubhouse,” Bolt said. “His work ethic and competitive spirit set the tone for everyone around him. While we’ll miss having him on the mound this year, we know he’ll attack his recovery with the game determination he brings every day, and we look forward to welcoming him back stronger than ever.”

Nebraska is slated to play Washington in a Big Ten-opening series this weekend in Lincoln.
