Baxter Arena: The Heart of UNO Mavericks Hockey in Omaha

by Aug 18, 2024Omavs Hockey

Baxter Arena - Home to Omaha Mavericks Hockey

When it comes to college hockey, the environment in which the game is played can be as crucial as the team itself. For the Omaha Mavericks, Baxter Arena is more than just a rink; it’s a hub of energy, passion, and tradition that fuels the team and electrifies fans. Since its opening, Baxter Arena has become a defining element of UNO hockey, offering a blend of state-of-the-art facilities, an intense home-ice advantage, and a fan experience unlike any other.

From Civic Auditorium to Baxter Arena: A New Era for Mavericks Hockey

For years, the Mavericks called the Civic Auditorium home. It was a venue filled with memories, including the program’s launch and the initial building of its fanbase. However, by 2015, the need for a new, modern venue was clear. Enter Baxter Arena. At a cost of $81.6 million, this state-of-the-art facility was designed to do more than just host hockey games — it was intended to be the heartbeat of Mavericks hockey.

Mike Kemp, the first head coach of the Mavericks and an instrumental figure in bringing NCAA Division I hockey to Omaha, described the transition as a significant milestone. “When we sat down to design Baxter Arena, our whole goal and objective was to make it as intimidating and as close to the Civic as modern architecture would allow us,” he said. “In the Civic, there was less legroom, more of a vertical pitch, and the atmosphere was electric. We wanted to bring that same energy to Baxter but with all the modern amenities.”

The move to Baxter Arena marked a new era, symbolizing not just a physical change but a shift in ambition and vision. The Mavericks’ attendance numbers reflected this. During the 2022-23 season, Omaha averaged 7,043 fans per game, ranking fourth in the NCAA and demonstrating how Baxter Arena became a draw for fans across the region.

A Fan Experience Like No Other

One of the main reasons Baxter Arena has been so successful is its ability to create an unforgettable fan experience. On game nights, the arena is packed with passionate supporters, many of whom have been with the program since its inception. Traditions like the iconic “fish toss” after the first Mavericks goal — where a frozen fish is thrown onto the ice to symbolize the opposing team needing to “fish” the puck out of their net — add a unique flavor to every game. The tradition started in 2001 and continues to this day, with the fish kept in a freezer under section 118, ready for action.

The boisterous cheers of the Red Army, a dedicated fan section known for banging on blue trash cans and leading chants, make Baxter Arena a formidable venue for visiting teams. This group, located at the bottom of section 112, is a staple of the game-day atmosphere, contributing to the arena’s reputation as one of the toughest places to play in college hockey.

The “Unleash the Fury” hype video, played before the final period, has become synonymous with the Mavericks’ never-say-die attitude, energizing both the team and the crowd. With an immersive atmosphere that seamlessly blends cutting-edge sound and lighting systems, Baxter Arena ensures every fan feels like they are a part of the game. During the 2023-24 season, the Mavericks played in front of seven sellout crowds, including five consecutive sellouts to close the regular season, a testament to the arena’s appeal.

Modern Facilities, Timeless Passion

Beyond the stands, Baxter Arena provides players with top-tier facilities that support their development both on and off the ice. The arena boasts two ice sheets, making it a versatile venue that can host not only Mavericks games but also youth hockey events, figure skating competitions, and community ice activities. This multi-use design has helped to position Baxter Arena as a critical community hub, cementing its place in Omaha’s sports landscape.

For the players, having access to quality locker rooms, training facilities, and other amenities has been a game-changer. Head coach Mike Gabinet noted, “Baxter Arena has just been such an unbelievable resource for us. First off, having it connected to Aksarben Village, which is within walking distance for most of our players, is huge for their time management and lets them spend more time at the rink, and they want to be here. We’ve seen how it’s helped not just in games, but in the daily grind of training and development”.

Recruiting Edge: Attracting Top Talent to Omaha

A world-class arena can make all the difference when it comes to recruiting, and Baxter Arena is no exception. For young athletes looking to make a name for themselves, the chance to play in a venue that mirrors the feel of a professional rink is an enticing proposition. From the design of the rink to the amenities available, everything at Baxter Arena is geared towards providing an environment where players can thrive.

“From a recruiting standpoint, it creates a lot of buzz, too. It looks like a mini NHL arena and they’re blown away once they get here and see the facilities and the campus,” said Coach Gabinet. This ability to impress recruits has played a crucial role in UNO’s rise as a competitive force in college hockey. During the 2024 recruitment cycle, three top-tier players cited Baxter Arena as a significant factor in their decision to commit to Omaha.

A Growing Legacy of Success

Baxter Arena has quickly become more than just a place where the Mavericks play; it has grown into a symbol of the team’s resilience, passion, and pursuit of excellence. The Mavericks’ success on the ice — including five NCAA tournament appearances and consistent top-tier conference finishes — has been mirrored by the arena’s ability to bring the community together.

Every game at Baxter feels like a celebration of both the sport and the city of Omaha. Fans leave the arena not just with memories of great plays and close wins but with a sense of being part of a larger hockey community. “You get recognized when you’re out in the city and that support you feel is really special, and I don’t think you get that everywhere,” said Coach Gabinet, reflecting on the growing fan base and their impact on the program.

The arena has also hosted major events, such as the 2018 NCHC Frozen Faceoff, and has been recognized as one of the top venues in college hockey. Its design, capacity, and amenities have been lauded by coaches, players, and fans across the nation, solidifying its status as a premier destination for the sport.

Baxter Arena stands as a testament to the growth and ambition of the UNO Mavericks hockey program. It represents a blend of tradition and innovation, honoring the past while looking forward to the future. Whether it’s a crucial playoff game or a heated conference clash, Baxter Arena ensures that every night is game night, and every fan leaves with an unforgettable experience.

As the Mavericks continue to build their legacy, Baxter Arena will remain at the heart of their journey, symbolizing the program’s resilience, passion, and community spirit. For Omaha, Baxter Arena isn’t just a venue; it’s home.
