The story of UNO Hockey is one of growth, transformation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Since its inception, the program has undergone significant changes, none more impactful than the move from the historic Civic Auditorium to the modern Baxter Arena. This shift marked a new era for the Omaha Mavericks, symbolizing their evolution from a fledgling program to a competitive force in college hockey.
A Humble Beginning: The Civic Auditorium Era
UNO Hockey began its journey in 1997 at the Civic Auditorium, a venue that had already been a cornerstone of Omaha’s sports scene. With a capacity of over 9,000 seats, the Civic was an iconic location known for hosting concerts, basketball games, and more. For the Mavericks, it was a place to build a fanbase and establish their identity in the competitive world of NCAA hockey.
Mike Kemp, the program’s first head coach, fondly remembers the early days. “The Civic Auditorium had character. It had a great location, and it provided an intimate setting that made the games loud and intense. Our fans were close to the action, and you could feel their passion every game night,” said Kemp. This atmosphere played a vital role in helping the team navigate the challenges of their early seasons.
During their time at the Civic, the Mavericks developed a loyal fanbase, with attendance consistently ranking among the best in the nation. The peak came during the 2000-01 season when UNO reached the CCHA Championship game, a feat that cemented their presence in college hockey. However, as the program grew, so did the need for a facility matching their ambitions.
Baxter Arena: A New Home for a Growing Program
In 2015, UNO Hockey took a bold step forward with the opening of Baxter Arena, a state-of-the-art facility that became the new home for the Mavericks. The move to Baxter was about more than just upgrading to a modern rink; it was a statement of intent. With a capacity of 7,898 for hockey games, Baxter Arena was designed to offer an intimate but electrifying atmosphere, preserving the intensity of the Civic while providing fans with greater comfort and amenities.
“This wasn’t just about getting a new building,” said Coach Mike Gabinet. “It was about creating a home for UNO hockey that players could be proud of, a place where we could grow the sport in Omaha. Baxter Arena has been everything we hoped it would be and more”.
The $81.6 million arena features two ice sheets, one of which is dedicated to the Mavericks, while the other is used for youth hockey and community events. This multi-use design has allowed Baxter Arena to become a hub for ice sports in Omaha, making it more than just a venue for college games but a community asset.
Preserving Tradition While Embracing Innovation
One of the key goals in designing Baxter Arena was to carry forward the traditions that made the Civic Auditorium special. The famous “fish toss” tradition, which dates back to the program’s early days, was preserved. After the first Mavericks goal of each home game, fans throw a frozen fish onto the ice, symbolizing the opponent having to “fish” the puck out of their net. This quirky and beloved tradition has followed the team from the Civic to Baxter, connecting the past with the present.
Baxter Arena also introduced new features that have become a part of the Mavericks’ identity. The “Unleash the Fury” hype video, played before the third period, has become a rallying call for fans, energizing the crowd and the team alike. These elements, combined with improved sightlines, acoustics, and amenities, have made Baxter Arena one of the premier venues in college hockey.
A Recruiting Game-Changer
The move to Baxter Arena has not only improved the fan experience but has also had a significant impact on recruiting. Young athletes are drawn to the idea of playing in a professional-style venue, complete with modern locker rooms, training facilities, and easy access to campus amenities. Baxter Arena’s proximity to Aksarben Village means players can easily transition between their academic and athletic commitments, which is a major selling point for recruits.
“Baxter has been a game-changer for us in so many ways,” said Gabinet. “It’s helped us attract talent from across the country and even internationally. When recruits see the facility and realize they’ll be playing in front of some of the best fans in college hockey, it’s an easy decision for them”.
A Legacy of Success and Community Engagement
Since the move to Baxter Arena, the Mavericks have continued to build on their legacy, with several NCAA tournament appearances and consistently strong showings in the competitive NCHC conference. However, perhaps the most significant aspect of Baxter Arena’s success has been its role in fostering community engagement.
In addition to hosting UNO hockey games, Baxter Arena regularly welcomes youth hockey tournaments, figure skating events, and even concerts and conventions. This multi-use approach has made it a vital part of Omaha’s sports and entertainment landscape, strengthening the bond between the Mavericks and the community.
Looking Ahead: The Future of UNO Hockey at Baxter Arena
As UNO Hockey continues to grow, Baxter Arena remains a central part of its identity. The facility has been a driving force behind the program’s ability to attract top talent, create unforgettable experiences for fans, and establish a strong community presence.
The Mavericks’ success on the ice, combined with the support they receive from the community, has solidified Omaha’s status as a hockey town. And with Baxter Arena as their home, the Mavericks are well-positioned to continue building on that legacy for years to come.
