Developing Leaders: How Omaha Hockey Builds Character On and Off the Ice

The Omaha Mavericks hockey program is known not just for its success on the ice, but for the way it shapes well-rounded individuals who excel both athletically and personally. Developing leadership qualities has always been a cornerstone of the team’s philosophy, fostering a culture where players are encouraged to grow as athletes and as leaders. For Omaha Hockey, this approach has been essential to building a competitive program that prides itself on discipline, resilience, and integrity.

The Four Pillars of Leadership

Omaha Hockey’s leadership development begins with a philosophy rooted in four core values: dedication, discipline, determination, and desire. These “Four Ds,” as they are known, were introduced by Mike Kemp, the program’s first head coach, and have remained a guiding principle ever since. “When we started this program, we knew we had to build it on more than just skill. We needed a foundation that would define who we are and what we represent, both on and off the ice,” said Kemp.

These values aren’t just slogans on a locker room wall. They are ingrained into the daily routines of the team, from training sessions to team meetings, and players are constantly reminded of the importance of these qualities. Whether it’s showing up early for practice, staying focused during drills, or leading by example, the emphasis on character development is evident in every aspect of Omaha Hockey.

Developing Leaders Through Responsibility

Leadership on the ice often translates to leadership off the ice, and this is something that Omaha Hockey takes seriously. Players are given responsibilities that help them learn to manage their time, communicate effectively, and handle the pressures of balancing athletics and academics. For team captain Nolan Krenzen, this has been a key part of his growth during his time with the Mavericks.

“Being a leader is more than just wearing the ‘C’ on your jersey. It’s about holding yourself accountable and being there for your teammates, whether that’s in a game, at practice, or in the classroom,” Krenzen explained. “It’s something I’ve learned and tried to improve on every year I’ve been here”.

Coaching That Encourages Growth

Head Coach Mike Gabinet has continued the tradition of leadership development that began with his predecessors, but he’s also brought his own approach to the program. For Gabinet, building a successful team starts with building strong individuals. This means taking the time to understand each player’s strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations, and helping them set personal goals that align with the team’s objectives.

“One of the things we emphasize here is self-awareness. We want our players to know what they’re good at, but also where they need to improve. And it’s our job as coaches to guide them through that process,” said Gabinet. “If you’re going to be a leader, you have to start by leading yourself. That’s the foundation for everything we do”.

The coaching staff also organizes leadership workshops and brings in guest speakers from various fields, including former athletes, business leaders, and community figures, to share their insights and experiences. These sessions are designed to expose players to different perspectives and to teach them that leadership goes beyond the rink.

The Importance of Community Involvement

Part of being a leader is giving back, and Omaha Hockey has made community engagement a key part of its program. Players regularly participate in local charity events, youth hockey clinics, and community service projects. This involvement helps them understand the value of teamwork, empathy, and social responsibility, reinforcing the idea that being a Maverick means being part of something bigger than themselves.

During the 2023-24 season, the Mavericks participated in over 20 community events, from helping at food banks to visiting local schools. “It’s important for us to connect with the community because they’re the ones who support us every game,” said Krenzen. “Giving back is just one way we can show our appreciation”.

Leadership On Display: Omaha Hockey Alumni

The emphasis on character development has had a lasting impact, with many Omaha Hockey alumni going on to successful careers both in and out of sports. Former Mavericks like Andrej Sustr, who played several seasons in the NHL, have credited their time in Omaha as a formative experience that taught them how to handle adversity and lead by example.

“Playing at Omaha taught me how to be resilient. There were always challenges, but the coaches here prepared me to face them head-on, and that’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my career,” said Sustr, reflecting on his time with the program.

Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders

As the Mavericks gear up for another exciting season, the focus on leadership development remains as strong as ever. For the coaching staff, the goal is to create a team environment where every player, whether a freshman or a senior, feels empowered to lead. This doesn’t just mean making speeches in the locker room; it means taking initiative, supporting teammates, and embodying the values that define Omaha Hockey.

“There’s no one way to be a leader. Everyone has their own style, and we want our players to find what works best for them,” said Gabinet. “The most important thing is that they’re willing to grow and step up when it matters. That’s what makes a true leader”.
