Victor Evans III will get his first taste of the Big Ten with Nebraska football on Saturday, and he’s excited to experience it with his teammates.
The senior corner spent three seasons at Florida International before transferring to Nebraska. The Huskers are 3-0 and will face their first road test at Michigan State Saturday.
“Every day I come here, just to practice with them is just excitement,” Evans said. “So to be on the road with them knowing it’s just us together going against somebody else is just fun.”
Evans and the Huskers have had a lot of fun so far. They’ve dominated their opponents while playing in front of their home crowd at Memorial Stadium.
The 6-foot-1 senior has started the last two games, recording three tackles and two pass breakups. He said he’s enjoyed the atmosphere.
“It’s been fun just to be out here, like, ‘I really played at Memorial,’” Evans said. “They were telling me about it the whole time since I’ve been here in the spring. They were like, ‘Oh, it’s going to be packed; it’s probably one of the biggest crowds you’re going to play in.’ Everybody says it’s fun, being out there with my brothers and just looking up at the crowd before the game starts.”
Evans and the Huskers will play in front of a different type of crowd when they travel to East Lansing this week. For Evans, it holds special significance with it being his first time playing in the Big Ten.
“Football is football wherever you go, but when you’re on this level, you hear, ‘Oh, this is the best conference,’” Evans said. “So it does give you a different type of confidence once you feel like you can play guys in this conference.”
Evans said he’s gained more confidence as well. He credits the defensive backs in his room, including senior corner Andrew Marshall, freshman Danny Odem III and others.
“We all just watch each other’s film, look at each other, we grade each other, so we’re all learning from each other to get each other better,” Evans said.
One area Nebraska hopes to improve in is turnovers. Under defensive coordinator Rob Aurich, the teams adopted the motto, ‘Take three.’ The Huskers aim to get three takeaways per game. Although they’ve fell short thus far, Evans believes they’ll come.
“There are some we’ve missed out on, but I feel like we’ve got the right mindset of trying to attack the ball,” Evans said. “I feel like there’s more out there for us to go get.”
Nebraska will look to use that attacking mindset as it continues preparation for the Spartans.
“I feel like there’s just going to be a lot of physicality,” Evans said of his expectations for conference play. “We know we’re going to have to tackle a lot, set blocks, set edges, really just be physical.”
