No. 1 Nebraska volleyball extended its streak of sweeps to nine by handling Michigan 3-0 at a sold-out Crisler Center in Ann Arbor Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers (18-0, 8-0 Big Ten) beat the Wolverines 25-18, 25-13, 25-18 in front of a Michigan-record 12,707 fans, besting the previous high mark by more than 4,500 people.

Nebraska hit .390 (its ninth straight match over .300) and held Michigan to .079 in what Coach Dani Busboom Kelly called a “really good” performance.

“I was a little bit concerned,” the head coach said on the Huskers Radio Network. “I thought Michigan would come out on fire, having just lost to a tough five-gamer, and they’ve got some outside hitters that have heavy arms, and so I was a little worried, but I thought our defense really stepped up, and offensively, I thought Bergen [Reilly] had a great match.”

Harper Murray saw her stretch of errorless matches end, but the Ann Arbor native still led the way with nine kills on .269 hitting. Andi Jackson added eight kills on 10 errorless swings and six blocks. The Huskers got seven kills and three blocks apiece from Taylor Landfair (.429 hitting) and Virginia Adriano (.333) as Reilly (28 assists and eight digs) once again kept all her hitters involved.

Laney Choboy earned her second straight start at libero and contributed six digs as the Huskers out-dug the Wolverines by 10. Nebraska also finished with 13 blocks, its third-highest total of the season.

“It was great,” Busboom Kelly said. “When you’re playing a fast offense, and the block can get there, it’s very hard for the attackers to hit around the block, so we took advantage of that. I thought Andi had a spectacular game for her blocking, and she was making big moves, so really good to see that.”

Nebraska got off to a slow start as Michigan jumped out to a 4-1 run before the Huskers even took a proper swing. The teams went back and forth for a while with five ties and three lead changes before Olivia Mauch served a 4-0 run including an ace to put the Huskers in front for good. Murray followed soon after with a 7-0 serving run to build a 21-13 lead.

Michigan put together a 4-0 run late to trim the deficit to five and trigger a Nebraska timeout, but the Huskers won the next two rallies to close it out.

The Huskers hit .360 and held Michigan to .146, with the left sides combining for seven kills on 12 errorless swings. Nebraska out-dug the Wolverines 14-6 as Michigan took 16 more swings but only managed two more kills.

Nebraska led wire-to-wire the rest of the match, winning five of the first six rallies in set two. Michigan kept it close for a but until Reilly served a 7-0 run to give Nebraska a 15-7 lead. The Huskers’ defense continued to smother the Wolverines as the visitors won six of the final eight rallies.

Nebraska nearly has as many blocks (five) as Michigan had kills (six). The Wolverines nearly had as many attack errors (11) as Nebraska had kills (12). The Huskers hit .400, the Wolverines minus-.185.

Nebraska got off to a strong start in set three as well as Choboy capped a 4-0 run with an ace for a 6-1 lead. Freshman Manaia Ogbechie checked in early in the set and terminated her first swing then teamed up with Landfair for a block to give Nebraska an 11-6 advantage.

Michigan rallied to within one a couple of times, but the Huskers responded with a 6-1 run including two kills and a solo block from Jackson for an 18-12 lead.

Freshman Campbell Flynn, another Michigan native, checked in before the final point of the Nebraska run to set the offense the rest of the way, and she dished out five assists down the stretch as Nebraska cruised to the finish.

“Harper, obviously, was great, and Campbell came in against Michigan State, did a nice job, and then today, finished it off for us and I thought had three, four beautiful sets in a row, so that was good to see,” Busboom Kelly said.

The Huskers hit .406 with 16 kills (after notching just 12 in each of the first two sets) and held Michigan to .212. Jackson led the way with four kills.

The win completed a clean sweep in the state of Michigan for the Huskers, who beat Michigan State 3-0 on Friday.

The Huskers won 25-15, 25-18, 25-20, including a first set that saw them terminate on 16 of their 22 swings for a .636 hitting percentage. Murray recorded her second straight match without an error, leading the way with 13 kills on .500 hitting, seven digs and an ace.

The Huskers hit .383 overall and held Michigan State to .204. Landfair finished with eight kills on .500 hitting while the middles, Rebekah Allick and Jackson, combined for 11 kills on 17 swings (.471 hitting) and nine blocks. Jackson added three aces as the Huskers finished with a season-high nine as a team. Teraya Sigler also served three aces and matched Murray with seven digs to lead the team.

After a weekend spent on the road, the Huskers will get a week to train at home before hosting a pair of weekend matches at the Devaney Center on Friday and Saturday.
