Today on Hurrdat Sports Radio, Damon Benning joined hosts Ravi Lulla and Austin Jacobsen to dive into Nebraska’s bowl preparation and reflect on the College Football Playoff’s first-round results.
Nebraska Prepares for Bowl Game with Focus on Logistics and Physicality
As Nebraska gears up for its upcoming bowl game, Coach Matt Rhule and his staff are emphasizing efficiency and physicality. Benning highlights the team’s meticulous logistical planning, particularly efforts to minimize bus travel. According to Benning, Rhule is leveraging local familiarity to maximize practice efficiency while reducing travel time.
“Logistics are key,” Benning states. “You don’t want your guys on a bus for three hours a day. Rhule is working hard to strike a balance — he knows all the nooks and crannies of the area, and he’s ensuring they’re ready without exhausting them.”
Nebraska has been preparing with physical practices, a decision reflecting Rhule’s commitment to tackling fundamentals — a crucial aspect against Boston College’s robust running game. Benning praises the Huskers’ energy, noting how players remained committed even during rest days by prioritizing their recovery and conditioning.
Thoughts on the College Football Playoff’s First Round
Benning was impressed by Notre Dame’s gritty performance, Texas’ offensive execution and Ohio State’s physicality during the first round of the College Football Playoffs. Reflecting on the results, Benning suggests that home-field advantages in the first round were impactful, adding excitement and unique challenges to the matchups.
“I love the idea of home sites in the playoffs,” Benning remarks. “Until we achieve more competitive balance, this adds an edge and makes the atmosphere electric.”
Clemson’s defensive struggles and Tennessee’s shortcomings in the playoffs give teams the need to address specific gaps in their game plans. Despite enjoying the playoff format, Benning acknowledges that some matchups lacked competitive parity, reinforcing arguments for structural changes in future seasons.
A Balanced Focus for Nebraska
Nebraska football is focused on maintaining a balanced mindset as they approach the bowl game. While bowl games inherently offer unique experiences, the Huskers remain focused on securing a win rather than treating the trip as a celebratory event.
“Nebraska hasn’t been in this position for a while, so balancing preparation and enjoyment is crucial,” Benning notes. “The players are embracing the challenge and seem to genuinely enjoy the process.”
As the Huskers prepare for Boston College, Benning expresses optimism, crediting the team’s focus and discipline. Nebraska’s ability to tackle and control the ground game will be pivotal in determining their success.
