The anticipation for the annual Creighton versus Nebraska men’s basketball game has been ratcheted up a notch this season.
Nebraska is 7-0 for just the fifth time in school history. A win Sunday over their in-state rival Creighton would give the Huskers (7-0) their best start since 1977-78.
Should Creighton win, the Jays would improve to 7-1 or better after eight games for the fifth time in 14 seasons under Greg McDermott.
Last year, Nebraska upset No. 7 Creighton 63-53 in Omaha. The Husker win was the first in 13 regular season games over the Bluejays’, a streak that dated back to 1995.
Creighton would improve to 4-1 inside Pinnacle Bank Arena. No other nonconference team owns more than one win in the 10-year history of the venue.
Matchup History
Nebraska and Creighton are meeting for the 57th time in series history.
Creighton has won 19 of the past 24 regular-season match-ups against the Huskers. The Bluejays lead the all-time series (including postseason) 29-27. The Bluejays have won nine of the last 11 meetings, with eight of those wins by double-figures.
Nebraska is looking for consecutive wins in the series for the first time since winning seven straight from 1990-1997.
Creighton won four of the first seven meetings in the history of the series before a 45-year break where the in-state rivals did not play each other. The series has been played at least once each season since 1977 and is Creighton’s longest-running nonconference series.
Greg McDermott is 16-5 all-time against Nebraska (10-3 as Creighton head coach) and 3-2 against Fred Hoiberg. McDermott is the only Creighton men’s basketball coach to win seven straight games over the Cornhuskers (2011-17), and his 10 overall victories are tied with Dana Altman (who was 10-7 against Nebraska) among Bluejay men’s basketball head coaches all-time.
Creighton has led at halftime in 18 of the past 24 regular-season meetings, with eight double-digit halftime leads in that span. Four of the six times that Creighton trailed at half against Nebraska, the Bluejays’ had a comeback win. Nebraska has led at halftime and beaten Creighton in the regular season just twice since Jan. 8, 1997, with those coming in December of 2018 and Dec. 2, 2022.
Nebraska has scored more than 30 first-half points in just four of the last 20 regular-season meetings against Creighton.
