The trophy that will be awarded to the winner is a tribute to South Omaha’s own Marlin Briscoe. Briscoe, drafted in the 14th round by the AFL’s Denver Broncos in 1968, was the first black starting quarterback in professional football. A college football Hall of Fame inductee in 2016, Briscoe played quarterback at Omaha University (1963-1967) and won a state championship while playing running back at Omaha South.
