Burt headed to Iowa

Creighton Prep tight end Michael Burt is headed to Iowa. Thursday, the 6-foot-6, 230-pound tight end announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes were the first to offer the 6-foot-6, 230-pound senior on June 5.

“I just feel it (Iowa) fits me best. No negativity towards other programs but right when I left campus I knew,” Burt said of the Hawkeyes. “The players I spent time with I enjoyed, The coaches are down to earth and I connected with them really well.”

Burt chose Iowa over Power 5 offers from Nebraska, Illinois and Minnesota.

Burt’s recruitment picked up steam after attending the Lindenwood Mega Camp on June 2 and camping at Iowa June 4.

“Mega Camp opened everyones eyes. Iowa was there and they really pushed me to go to their camp on that Sunday,” he said. “I was scheduled to go to Nebraska on that day but I switched and once tight end U offers you its hard to say no.”

Before June 2, Burt held offers from Northern Illinois (March 6) and Eastern Michigan (April 11). After Lindenwood, Miami (OH), South Dakota State, Southeast Missouri State, Northern Iowa and South Dakota offered.

“It was a big couple of weeks. I never really felt rushed but I felt like I needed to explore options right away,” Burt said of the speed of his recruitment. “Once July hits you don’t have the opportunity to get to campuses. I didn’t know I was going to be ready to commit this quick but after I left Iowa I knew it.”

Burt officially visited both Nebraska (June 16) and Iowa (June 10). He did take an unofficial visit to Minnesota on June 5.

In the end Iowa won Burt’s commitment over Nebraska. Iowa’s development of tight ends, stable program culture and the personality fit with him and the coaches were key in securing Burt’s commitment.

“I grew up a fan my whole life and I kept my heart open to Nebraska,” he said. “I knew if it was a good fit I would like it because I grew up a Nebraska fan. I don’t have any negativity towards Nebraska but I just knew it wasn’t a fit for me and my personality.”
