Today on Hurrdat Sports Radio, Mitch Sherman of The Athletic joins host Ravi Lulla and Damon Benning to discuss Nebraska Football’s coaching strategies and the impact of recent staffing changes under Head Coach Matt Rhule.

Dana Holgorsen’s Influence: A Fresh Approach

The integration of Dana Holgorsen as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator with his direct and unfiltered coaching style has drawn attention, sparking comparisons to Rhule’s more measured approach. Sherman highlights how Holgorsen’s method — such as referring to players by their numbers instead of names — provides a clear-eyed evaluation free of emotional biases. This unconventional tactic has prompted mixed reactions but is seen as part of Holgorsen’s strategy to instill objectivity and drive competition among players.

Sherman and Benning note that Holgorsen’s arrival introduces a much-needed contrast to Rhule’s style. This “good cop, bad cop” dynamic between the two leaders is expected to cultivate a balanced environment for player development and staff cohesion.

A Change in Offensive Leadership

The decision to appoint Holgorsen as the offensive coordinator towards the end of the season shifted media and fan focus, underscoring Rhule’s willingness to adapt for the program’s benefit. Holgorsen’s fresh perspective on play-calling and in-game decisions, while not without early missteps, is seen as a potential turning point for Nebraska’s offense.

Holgorsen’s candid nature allows him to critique players and strategies in ways that a head coach might avoid for diplomatic reasons. As Benning points out, this creates a unique dynamic where Holgorsen acts as a sounding board for Rhule, enabling more honest feedback and fostering an open line of communication.

Coordinators as Future Head Coaches

Another discussion is the positions of coordinators and head coaches due to the Husker’s unprecedented position of having two coordinators — Dana Holgorsen and Tony White — who could realistically become head coaching candidates. Sherman notes that this speaks to the program’s strong staff under Rhule and its potential to attract high-caliber coaching talent. For Nebraska, this marks a significant shift, recalling the days of Tom Osborne when assistant coaches were regularly considered for head coaching roles.

A Long-Term Vision

Sherman emphasizes that fans should not expect immediate, sweeping changes. With Rhule’s substantial contract and long-term vision, Nebraska is committed to building sustained success rather than seeking quick fixes. He compares the current strategy to the cycles of past coaching eras, asserting that the stakes are higher now, both financially and structurally.

The Takeaway

Nebraska football’s evolving coaching dynamics under Rhule signal a program willing to embrace innovation and fresh perspectives. With Holgorsen’s no-nonsense approach complementing Rhule’s steady leadership, the Cornhuskers are positioning themselves for long-term growth. As the season unfolds, seeing flashes of the team’s ability to integrate these contrasting styles will be crucial in shaping their trajectory.
