Former Creighton men’s basketball assistant and High Point head coach Alan Huss is returning to Creighton to fill the vacancy on Greg McDermott’s staff. Creighton will name Huss coach-in-waiting, according to a source, setting him up as McDermott’s successor.
The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman first reported the news and indicated there is no specific timeline for McDermott’s retirement, though it likely will come within the next two years.
Huss, a Creighton alumnus, spent six season as an assistant on McDermott’s staff (2017-2023) before leaving to accept the head coaching gig at High Point. He led the Panthers to a 56-15 record over his two seasons. Huss took over the program after a 14-17 season and coached the Panthers to a 27-win season and a runner-up finish in the CBI in year one. This season, High Point went 29-6, sweeping the Big South regular season and tournament titles to earn the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since moving to Division I in 1999.
Creighton went 134-68 in Huss’ six season on staff with four NCAA Tournament appearances including trips to the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. He played a key role in the program’s recruiting efforts and offensive game-planning while working closely with the team’s big men, including Ryan Kalkbrenner who earned All-America and Defensive Player of the Year honors this season at Creighton.
Huss began his college coaching career as an assistant at New Mexico, where he spent three seasons before joining McDermott’s staff in Omaha. Prior to that, he spent four seasons as the head coach at prep basketball powerhouse La Lumiere.
Huss, a native of Decatur, Illinois, was a standout player at North Kansas City High School before joining the Bluejays. The 6-foot-9 center played in 94 games with 39 starts from 1997 to 2001, helping the Bluejays reach three NCAA Tournaments and capture three Missouri Valley titles (two tournament, one regular season).
Huss will replace Ryan Miller, who left Creighton to accept the head coaching job at Murray State in mid-March.
The 2025-26 season will be McDermott’s 16th at the helm in Omaha. He has guided the Bluejays to 14 20-win seasons during his tenure, including each of the last 10 years. He has amassed a 630-366 record overall record to this point including a 350-171 mark at Creighton.
